Session Press is pleased to present Kid Echo, a new monograph by Korean photographer Sung Jin Park.
Photographed throughout the early 2000s and composed entirely of previously unpublished works, Kid Echo revisits the world of adolescence first explored in Park’s acclaimed monograph Kid Nostalgia. Through a refined selection of direct encounters with his subjects, the publication celebrates Park’s extraordinary sensitivity toward portraiture. More than twenty years after all of these photographs were made, Park revisits the work with a deeper appreciation for its openness and emotional ambiguity.
Born in Seoul and educated in New York, Park studied both painting and photography at Pratt Institute before returning to Korea, where he began photographing teenagers he encountered throughout Seoul and its outskirts. During his years in New York, Park encountered the work of photographers such as Walker Evans, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Diane Arbus, whose exhibitions shaped his understanding of photography as an expressive and psychological medium. He was equally influenced by French New Wave cinema, particularly the films of Jean-Luc Godard.
Rather than constructing a fixed social portrait of youth culture, Park photographed instinctively, drawn to subtle emotional tensions visible in posture, expression, and gaze. In an interview with writer and curator Marc Feustel included in the publication, Park reflects on his search for what he describes as “the moment of emotion,” inspired in part by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s notion of the “decisive moment.” For Park, however, the goal was not perfect composition or narrative clarity, but emotional presence: “I wanted them to be completely relaxed so their innocence could emerge.”
The emotional complexity of adolescence has long fascinated photographers around the world. Kid Echo shares affinities with the observational intimacy of Nigel Shafran, the raw youth energy found in Max Natkiel’s club kid photographs, and the introspective emotional atmosphere explored in Yurie Nagashima’s Empty White Room.
In contrast to the lighter and more immediate physical sensibility of Kid Nostalgia, Kid Echo embraces a slower and more meditative viewing experience. Carefully edited by the artist himself and printed on a heavier matte paper stock, the book emphasizes tonal delicacy and emotional intimacy. While Kid Nostalgia interspersed straightforward portraits with fragmentary images such as back views, cropped body details, and atmospheric gestures, Kid Echo places greater focus on direct and frontal portraiture, allowing for a more sustained and intimate encounter with each subject.
Tender, instinctive, and emotionally unresolved, Kid Echo stands as a rare achievement in the history of youth portraiture, revealing the enduring vulnerability and emotional power of adolescence through Sung Jin Park’s singular photographic vision.

2000年代初頭に撮影された未発表作品のみで構成された『Kid Echo』は、『Kid Nostalgia』(2014) で探求されたティーンエイジャーたちのポートレイトを、あらためて見つめ直す作品集です。被写体との直接的な出会いを中心に構成された本作からは、パクの卓越したポートレイト感覚と、若者たちへ向けられた繊細な眼差しが静かに浮かび上がります。これらの写真が撮影されてから20年以上を経た今、パク自身もまた、その曖昧さや感情の複雑さにあらためて魅力を感じています。
ソウル生まれのパクは、ニューヨークで教育を受け、Pratt Institute で絵画と写真を学びました。その後韓国へ戻り、ソウルや郊外で出会った若者たちを撮影し始めます。ニューヨーク滞在中には、Walker Evans、Alfred Stieglitz、Paul Strand、Diane Arbus らの作品に触れ、写真を単なる記録ではなく、感情や心理を映し出す表現として捉えるようになりました。また、フランス・ヌーヴェルヴァーグ映画、特に Jean-Luc Godard の作品からも強い影響を受けています。

青春という複雑で不安定な感情の領域は、長年にわたり世界中の写真家たちを魅了してきました。『Kid Echo』には、Nigel Shafran の静かな親密さ、Max Natkiel によるクラブキッズの写真に見られる生々しいエネルギー、そして Yurie Nagashima の『Empty White Room』に漂う内省的な空気感とも響き合うものがあります。

柔らかく、直感的で、そして簡単には説明しきることのできない『Kid Echo』は、思春期の脆さや感情の力強さを、ソン・ジン・パクならではの繊細な眼差しで捉えた、極めて稀有な作品集です。
Sung Jin Park:
Sung Jin Park was born in Seoul, South Korea. He studied both painting and photography in New York and graduated from Pratt Institute.
Park first gained recognition for his portrait series Kid Nostalgia, which captures outsider teenagers in Seoul, his hometown. For the series, he was selected for the Art+Commerce Festival for Emerging Photographers in New York in 2005. An accompanying exhibition catalogue, PEEK, was published by Art+Commerce, and selections from the work also appeared in Capricious #7 published by Capricious.
He was awarded First Prize at the “Up & Coming” 12th Photographic Center Northwest Competition, juried by Charlotte Cotton, former curator of photography at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 2012, Park participated in Youth Code, a special exhibition curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer for the Daegu Photo Biennale in Daegu, South Korea.
His work was also exhibited at the third edition of the La Nuu Festival in Rubí, Spain in 2017. In 2025, Kid Nostalgia was included in Fluorescent Adolescent, a photobook exhibition presented by Fondazione Palazzo Magnani as part of the Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

ソウルのアウトサイダー的なティーンエイジャーたちを捉えたポートレイトシリーズ『Kid Nostalgia』で注目を集める。同シリーズにより、2005年にニューヨークで開催された Art+Commerce Festival for Emerging Photographers に選出される。展覧会カタログ『PEEK』が Art+Commerce より刊行され、作品は Capricious 発行の『Capricious #7』にも掲載された。
