Goseong Choi
(Seongnam, Korea, 1984)
Goseong Choi currently works and resides in Brooklyn, New York. He holds an MFA in Fine Art from Pratt Institute. Choi's work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and international festivals including Philadelphia Museum of Art, Blue Sky Gallery, and Encuentros Abiertos-Festival dela Luz. Choi's work is held in collections at Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Philadelphia Museum of Art, New Mexico Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, and Haggarty Museum of Art.
Goseong Choi is a visual storyteller, seeking for the less-falseness of beings and chasing the ephemeral gestures of consciousness in woods. He examines his questions and confusions with photographic metaphor to embrace what could be misunderstood if it gets spoken and known. This is much evident in the body of work, In The Well. Choi was inspired to make the series from his vivid childhood memories of his shadow reflected from dark pitted well in his grandmother’s backyard. He investigates the confabulation of his childhood memories through metaphors illustrated by landscapes and gestures. The images transform into somewhat of a haiku; it is profoundly visceral and tantalizing. It is inviting and calm, yet there is an undertone of psychological uneasiness.
